Chanel Bag Care: How to Clean Lambskin, Caviar & More

Lambskin, Caviar, calfskin or patent leather: Chanel uses a wide variety of leathers. Each one needs a different approach to cleaning and care.

With high-quality designer bags, condition also plays an important role in preserving value. How Chanel bag prices have developed depends on many factors, however. Appropriate care can help preserve the condition of your bag over time.

Soft lambskin is less forgiving than grained Caviar leather. Dry vintage lambskin may need more care than a new bag, while patent leather should not be conditioned at all.

In this guide, you'll learn which care suits which Chanel leather and when it's better not to treat a material yourself.

Can I clean a Chanel bag at home?

Many Chanel bags made from smooth or grained lambskin and calfskin can be cleaned and cared for at home. The leather should be intact, and you should always test the product on an inconspicuous area first to see how the material, colour and finish react.

For delicate leather, apply the cleaner to a microfibre cloth first. The conditioner is intended exclusively for suitable genuine leather. Patent leather should only be cleaned on the surface, not conditioned.

GLOWBAG is not suitable for nubuck, suede, rough-finished leather, exotic leathers or particularly delicate specialty materials.

How often a bag needs care depends on how frequently you use it, how it is stored and the condition of the leather. A bag you carry regularly may need care sooner than one that spends most of its time protected in storage. Look at the leather itself: if it appears dry, dull or less supple, care may be useful.

What should you avoid on Chanel leather?

Baby wipes, make-up remover and home remedies don't belong on a Chanel bag. They can leave residue, alter the colour or affect the finish.

Be particularly careful with:

• alcohol and solvents
• vinegar, baking soda and other household cleaners
• olive oil, baby oil and rich cosmetic creams
• traditional shoe polish and strongly sealing care waxes
• vigorous rubbing on individual stains
• hairdryers, radiators or direct sunlight for drying

Not every stain can simply be cleaned away. Worn-off colour, deep scratches, exposed leather fibres or changes caused by heat and unsuitable products are damage to the material itself. A cleaner cannot reverse this kind of damage.

GLOW CLEANER and GLOW CONDITIONER were developed specifically for the care of high-quality handbags. Both products are water-based and alcohol-free. The conditioner contains ingredients including lanolin and orange oil. It cares for suitable genuine leather and helps keep it supple. It does not replace waterproofing or provide a UV filter.

Always test the products on an inconspicuous area before first use.

How to clean and care for Chanel Lambskin

Lambskin is one of Chanel's best-known leathers. The soft leather feels smooth and supple and shows off the characteristic matelassé quilting beautifully.

This fine surface is also delicate. Fingernails, jewellery and hard edges can leave marks. Colour transfer from denim can quickly become visible on lighter shades. Make-up, moisture, heat and unsuitable care products can also alter the finish.

How to clean Chanel Lambskin

Spray GLOW CLEANER onto a clean microfibre cloth first rather than directly onto the bag. Clean the leather using light pressure and even movements. Don't work on one area for too long and don't use a brush on delicate lambskin.

Surface dirt, make-up or light colour transfer may lift or at least become visibly reduced. If the colour has already worn away or a stain has penetrated deep into the leather, cleaning will often not be enough.

How to condition Chanel Lambskin

Apply a thin, even layer of GLOW CONDITIONER with a fresh microfibre cloth. Work gently across the entire surface and then allow the bag to air dry. There is no need to buff the leather afterwards.

How often care is useful depends on how frequently you carry the bag, how it is stored and how the leather feels. If it still feels soft and well cared for, there is no need to follow a fixed schedule. If it starts to feel drier or looks duller, it may be time for care.

Why I'm particularly careful with Chanel Lambskin

My first black Chanel Classic Flap in lambskin is from 2012, and my black WOC is from 2013. At some point, make-up marks appeared on the Classic Flap. I tried various traditional leather care products, but the leather became increasingly grey and dull. Some products also left sticky residue.

Out of desperation, I eventually tried black shoe polish. It looked better at first, but the colour rubbed off onto my clothes. After that, I didn't carry the bag for years.

Eventually, I asked in a Chanel boutique how I should care for it. I didn't receive an official care recommendation. Baby oil was the only suggestion I was given. The internet was full of other DIY tips, but after my experience with shoe polish, I didn't want to experiment any further.

That experience eventually led to the idea for GLOWBAG. I wanted to develop bag care that doesn't treat delicate handbag leather like a shoe. Because leather is like skin. It needs care that suits the material.

To this day, I ask myself the same question with every product and every recommendation: would I put this on my own Chanel?

How to care for dry vintage Lambskin

Vintage lambskin can become very dry over time. In this case, it can make sense to skip cleaning at first and begin with GLOW CONDITIONER only.

Apply a small amount thinly and evenly. If the conditioner absorbs quickly and the leather still feels dry afterwards, you can repeat the treatment after a few days. Several light applications are preferable to applying too much product at once.

With my own vintage bags, I can often see and feel the difference straight away. The leather looks more supple, the existing colour appears richer and very fine surface signs of wear become less noticeable. With very dry but still intact leather, this effect can build with several light applications.

That's what I mean by anti-ageing for your bag. It won't make old leather new again, of course. But it can make it look noticeably more cared for and supple.

Once the leather becomes brittle, develops deep cracks, loses colour or the fibres begin to open, care products are no longer enough. This type of damage belongs in the hands of a specialist bag spa or professional leather restorer.

How to clean and care for Chanel Caviar leather

Caviar is the common name for Chanel's characteristically grained calfskin. It is one of the house's best-known leathers.

Its grained texture makes Caviar tougher and less prone to scratching than soft lambskin. Small signs of wear are also less noticeable within the grain. The leather is not scratch-proof or waterproof, however.

Dirt and make-up can settle into the texture. Caviar leather can also become dry or dull over time, and colour transfer from denim remains an issue on lighter shades.

How to clean Chanel Caviar leather

Apply GLOW CLEANER to a microfibre cloth and work evenly across the surface. On a pronounced grain, you can also use the GLOW BRUSH carefully. Test it on an inconspicuous area first to make sure the surface and finish tolerate the brush.

Remove loosened dirt and product residue afterwards with a clean cloth.

How to condition Chanel Caviar leather

Apply GLOW CONDITIONER thinly and evenly over the leather and allow the bag to air dry.

Use the condition of the leather and how frequently you carry the bag as your guide. A frequently used bag may need care sooner than one that is rarely carried. What matters is how the leather looks and feels.

How to clean and care for Chanel Calfskin

Calfskin can be smooth, finely grained or more heavily textured depending on the finish. Don't rely on the name alone; look at the finish of your particular bag as well.

Clean smooth calfskin carefully using GLOW CLEANER on a microfibre cloth. You can then apply a thin layer of GLOW CONDITIONER. How frequently care is useful depends on use, storage and the condition of the leather.

With very light colours or unusual finishes, the patch test is especially important. If colour transfers onto the cloth, stop cleaning and don't continue rubbing.

How to care for Chanel Aged Calfskin

Aged calfskin has an intentionally aged and slightly irregular appearance from the start. Small scratches and signs of wear are part of the look of this leather and are not automatically a sign of poor care.

Clean it with GLOW CLEANER applied to a cloth. Only use a brush if the texture and finish tolerate it. You can then apply a small amount of GLOW CONDITIONER evenly.

Don't try to work out every irregularity. With Aged Calfskin, some of that character is intentional.

How to clean Chanel patent leather

Patent leather is genuine leather with a high-gloss coating. This glossy layer is sensitive to heat, pressure and prolonged contact with other materials.

Light-coloured patent leather bags in particular can pick up colour from dark clothing, dust bags or other bags. The longer and warmer the contact, the more likely the colour is to migrate into the coating.

Store Chanel patent leather in a cool, dry place with enough space between bags. Light patent leather should not remain in prolonged contact with dark fabrics.

Surface dirt can be carefully removed using GLOW CLEANER on a microfibre cloth. Clean the bag in a cool room, work gently and test the cleaner on an inconspicuous area first.

Don't use GLOW CONDITIONER on patent leather. Conditioning ingredients cannot penetrate it in the same way they can conventional smooth leather.

Yellowing, stickiness and absorbed colour transfer are usually not surface dirt. If the coating itself has changed, cleaning cannot reverse it.

Which Chanel materials shouldn't you wet-clean yourself?

Not every Chanel bag is made from conventional smooth or grained leather. You shouldn't use GLOWBAG on the following materials:

• nubuck, suede and rough-finished leather
• genuine crocodile, snake, lizard or ostrich leather
• other exotic leathers
• shearling and similarly textured materials

I also wouldn't give a general recommendation for wet-cleaning tweed, jersey, silk, metallic leather, embroidery, sequins, beads or elaborate embellishments. If in doubt, ask Chanel or a specialist bag spa.

Embossed calfskin with a crocodile-style finish is not genuine exotic leather. Even so, always check how the colour and finish react before treating it.

Frequently asked questions about Chanel bag care

Do I always need to clean a Chanel bag before conditioning it?

No. If the leather is clean, you can use GLOW CONDITIONER without cleaning it first. This can be the better approach for dry vintage lambskin in particular.

If dust, make-up or other dirt is visible, remove it carefully before conditioning.

How do I remove scratches from Chanel Lambskin?

Very fine surface marks may become less noticeable after careful conditioning. The conditioner makes the leather more supple and can therefore visually soften small signs of wear.

Deep scratches, worn-off colour or exposed leather fibres cannot be conditioned away.

How often should I condition Chanel Caviar leather?

Use the condition of the leather and how frequently you carry the bag as your guide. If the leather still looks and feels supple and well cared for, there is no need to follow a fixed schedule. If it begins to feel drier or looks duller, care may be useful.

Can I remove denim colour transfer from a light Chanel bag?

Light, superficial denim transfer may lift or become less visible with careful cleaning if the leather is intact. If the colour has already penetrated deeply or the finish has been affected, a visible shadow may remain.

Don't work on the same area for too long or with too much pressure. You could remove some of the leather's colour while the stain itself remains.

Can conditioner repair brittle Chanel leather?

No. GLOW CONDITIONER cares for dry but still intact leather and helps keep it supple. It cannot repair cracks, exposed fibres, colour loss or other structural damage.

Is GLOWBAG suitable for every Chanel bag?

No. GLOWBAG is suitable for many smooth and grained lambskin and calfskin leathers. The products have not been tested or approved for nubuck, suede, rough-finished leather or exotic leathers. With specialty materials and unknown finishes, you should avoid treating the bag yourself.

How to care for a Chanel bag and preserve its value

A Chanel Classic Flap in lambskin needs different care from a Caviar Boy Bag or a patent leather bag. Always identify the material first and begin on an inconspicuous area.

With high-quality bags, it makes sense not to wait until the leather is already dry or damaged. Regular, appropriate care can help preserve the condition of the bag. That's important if you want to carry it for many years or perhaps resell it one day.

Care is also about preserving value. More importantly, it helps you enjoy using your bag rather than leaving it in the wardrobe because you're worried about the next stain.
