How Often Should You Clean and Care for a Designer Bag?
How often should you actually clean and care for your designer handbag? A general rule such as “every four weeks” or “twice a year” may sound practical, but it does not take the different materials into account.
You should not clean a designer handbag according to a fixed schedule, but when its condition and use require it. Visible dirt such as make-up, handling marks or surface dirt should ideally be removed promptly. A complete cleaning, however, is not necessary after every use.
There is no universal interval for leather care either. The type of leather, how often you use your bag, how it is stored and its current condition are what really matter. If suitable genuine leather feels drier or less supple than usual, it may be time to use a conditioner.
The short answer: Clean your bag when needed rather than according to the calendar. Condition suitable genuine leather when its condition requires it. Coated canvas should be cleaned but does not need a leather conditioner.
Why Should You Clean a Leather Handbag Regularly?
Over time, skin oils, make-up, dust and other everyday marks build up on a handbag. These tend to become particularly visible on handles, corners and areas that are touched frequently.
Regular cleaning when needed can help remove surface dirt early, before it becomes more difficult to deal with.
Take extra care with vintage bags. The condition of the leather, previous treatments and surface finish are often unknown. That’s why we’ve put together a separate guide on how to clean and care for a vintage bag properly.
How Often Should You Clean and Care for a Leather Handbag?
Instead of following fixed weekly or monthly intervals, pay attention to how often you use your bag, its material and its current condition.
| Situation | Cleaning | Conditioning |
|---|---|---|
| Frequently used leather handbag | When visibly dirty and as needed | When suitable leather feels drier or less supple |
| Occasionally used leather handbag | As needed | According to the condition of the leather |
| Light-coloured leather | Treat dirt and colour transfer as early as possible | According to the condition of the leather |
| Vintage leather | Check the material and condition carefully first | Dry but intact leather may need small amounts of conditioner more frequently |
| Coated canvas | When visibly dirty | No leather conditioner |
If you notice visible dirt such as make-up, grease or handling marks, you do not need to wait for a scheduled cleaning. The longer dirt remains on delicate surfaces, the more difficult it may become to remove later.
Colour and material also make a difference. Dirt and colour transfer usually become visible sooner on a light-coloured leather handbag than on a dark one. Coated canvas, on the other hand, can be cleaned but does not need to be treated with a leather conditioner.
How Do I Know When My Leather Handbag Needs Care?
Look at your bag and feel the leather. Its condition usually tells you more than the calendar.
If the leather looks drier than usual, feels less supple or appears more matte, conditioning may be helpful. Visible dirt, make-up or handling marks, on the other hand, are signs that the bag should be cleaned first.
Cleaning and conditioning are two different steps: a cleaner removes dirt. A conditioner provides suitable genuine leather with moisture and conditioning ingredients and helps keep it supple.
Which Products Are Suitable for Cleaning a Designer Handbag?
Not every leather care product is automatically suitable for a high-quality handbag. Products made for shoes or furniture were developed for different materials, surfaces and requirements.
With delicate handbag leather in particular, avoid aggressive cleaners, bleaching or abrasive agents and unsuitable home remedies. Traditional, heavily sealing care waxes are also not the right choice for every type of fine handbag leather.
The material is always what matters: smooth leather, Vachetta, suede and coated canvas all require different cleaning and care.
We explain which ingredients and products are suitable for designer handbags in more detail in our guide to choosing the right leather care for designer handbags.
How Do You Clean and Care for a Leather Handbag Properly?
For suitable smooth leather, the care routine generally consists of two steps: clean first, then condition. If the leather is already clean and only needs conditioning, however, cleaning it first is not always necessary.
GLOW CLEANER is a water-based cleaner for suitable surfaces and removes surface dirt such as everyday grime, grease and make-up. On delicate or more absorbent leather, apply the Cleaner to a clean microfibre cloth first and work with light pressure. Always test it on an inconspicuous area before use.
After cleaning, allow the leather to dry completely in the air. You can then apply a thin, even layer of GLOW CONDITIONER to suitable genuine leather. It is also water-based, contains ingredients including lanolin and orange oil, provides suitable genuine leather with moisture and conditioning ingredients and helps keep it supple.
The Conditioner does not replace waterproofing and does not contain a defined UV filter.
The idea behind GLOWBAG is inspired by skincare: clean, condition and always start by understanding the material in front of you.
Can You Clean Chanel, Hermès and Louis Vuitton Bags at Home?
Many designer handbags can be cleaned and cared for at home. But the material matters more than the brand.
Chanel Caviar, soft lambskin and grained Hermès leathers require a different approach from coated Louis Vuitton Canvas. Extra care is needed with porous leather, suede, exotic leather and new, still very light Vachetta.
The light-coloured leather trims found on many Louis Vuitton bags deserve particular attention. You can find everything you need to know in our guide to Louis Vuitton Vachetta leather.
Before cleaning a designer handbag yourself, always identify the material first and test the product on an inconspicuous area.

Does Caring for a Designer Handbag Affect Its Value?
The condition of a designer handbag plays an important role when it comes to resale. Material-appropriate cleaning and care can help keep the bag in well-maintained condition.
Whether and how the value of a designer handbag develops depends on many other factors as well, including the brand, model, demand, age, colour, rarity and accessories.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cleaning and Caring for Designer Handbags
Can You Clean a Leather Handbag Too Often?
A leather handbag does not need to be cleaned after every use. How often cleaning makes sense depends on how frequently you carry it, the type of leather and how dirty it is. Visible stains should ideally be treated promptly, but that does not mean the entire bag needs to be cleaned every time.
Do I Need to Use Conditioner After Every Cleaning?
Not necessarily. Cleaner and Conditioner have different jobs. Cleaner removes dirt, while Conditioner provides suitable genuine leather with moisture and conditioning ingredients and helps keep it supple. How often you use Conditioner depends on the material and the condition of the leather.
How Do I Remove Make-Up from a Leather Handbag?
Surface make-up marks on suitable smooth leather can be removed or reduced with an appropriate leather cleaner. With GLOWBAG, use the GLOW CLEANER. On delicate or unknown leather, always test the Cleaner on an inconspicuous area first.
If the make-up has already penetrated deeper into porous leather or caused discolouration, it may not be possible to remove it completely.
Should I Clean My Designer Handbag Before Storing It?
If there is visible dirt, it makes sense to remove it with a material-appropriate cleaning method before storing the bag for a longer period. Allow the bag to dry completely before putting it away.
A clean bag does not automatically need to be fully cleaned before storage. Here too, the rule is: clean when needed rather than according to the calendar.
Does a Canvas Bag Need Leather Conditioner?
Coated canvas does not need a leather conditioner. It can be cleaned, but it is not conditioned in the same way as genuine leather. If a canvas bag also has leather trims, care for those according to the specific type of leather.
Our guide to cleaning Louis Vuitton Canvas explains in detail how to care for coated canvas correctly.

The Right Care Routine for Your Designer Handbag
If your bag is made from suitable smooth or grained genuine leather, you can think of cleaning and conditioning as two separate steps: clean when there is visible dirt and condition when the leather needs it.
The GLOW DUO combines GLOW CLEANER and GLOW CONDITIONER as a two-step care routine for suitable leather handbags.
