How to Clean Louis Vuitton Canvas: Caring for MCM and Goyard Properly

Coated canvas often shows surprisingly little dirt. Dark Louis Vuitton Monogram or MCM Visetos in particular can look clean for a long time, even though make-up, skin oils and everyday dirt have built up on the surface.

Intact Louis Vuitton Monogram or Damier canvas can be cleaned at home. Careful cleaning also works for many MCM bags made from Visetos. Goyardine looks similarly robust, but stricter manufacturer guidelines apply to this material.

Before you start, take a close look at which parts of your bag are made of canvas. Handles and trims may be made of leather or Vachetta, and the lining is usually textile. Each of these areas needs different treatment.

For canvas, use CANVAS GLOW FOAM or, alternatively, GLOW CLEANER. GLOW CONDITIONER does not belong on coated canvas.

What Is Coated Canvas at Louis Vuitton, MCM and Goyard?

Canvas is not a type of leather. Beneath the printed surface is a fabric protected by a coating. The coating makes the material flexible and suitable for everyday use, but not indestructible.

Louis Vuitton itself describes Monogram and Damier as coated canvas and recommends cleaning them with a soft, damp cloth and a little soapy water. Oily substances, cosmetics, perfume and alcohol-based solutions should not come into contact with the canvas.

Although Louis Vuitton Monogram, MCM Visetos and Goyardine are often grouped together as designer canvas, the surfaces are not identical. In addition, these bags usually combine several materials:

If you are not sure what the material is, don't start with the whole bag. Check the care label and manufacturer's guidelines and test the product on an inconspicuous area.

Can You Clean Louis Vuitton Canvas Yourself?

Yes, as long as the coating is intact. Surface dirt, make-up, handling marks and light colour transfer can be loosened or at least visibly reduced.

Look at the bag in good light first. If the canvas is worn at the corners, cracked, sticky or the surface is already peeling, I would not use a brush there. A damaged coating cannot be restored by cleaning.

Seasonal prints and special motifs need even more care. Louis Vuitton points out that thin layers of colour on printed canvas can fade or wear off through friction. Leave delicate printed areas out if the manufacturer's guidelines say so.

What You Need for Cleaning

• CANVAS GLOW FOAM
• a soft brush, for example the GLOW BRUSH
• a clean microfibre cloth
• a clean, wipeable surface to work on
• for the lining, a small vacuum cleaner or lint brush if needed

CANVAS GLOW FOAM is a water-based, alcohol-free cleaning foam for coated canvas. Thanks to the foam, it is easy to dose in a controlled way and spread with a soft brush. GLOW CLEANER can also be used on intact coated canvas.

How to Clean Louis Vuitton Canvas: Step by Step

1. Empty the bag and remove dust

Take everything out of the bag. Remove crumbs and loose particles before any moisture comes into play. Grains of dirt can act like fine abrasive particles when rubbed.

Also check seams, corners and folds. That is often where dirt collects, and where you can first see whether the coating is already worn.

2. Test on an inconspicuous area

Apply a small amount of foam to a hidden area. Once it has dried, check that the shine, colour and surface are unchanged.

If colour comes off on the cloth or the area looks duller, stop cleaning. This can indicate a delicate finish or a surface that has already been affected.

3. Apply the foam sparingly

Apply CANVAS GLOW FOAM to the brush, a soft cloth or directly onto an intact area of canvas. Start with a small amount of product. You can always add more.

Work in small sections so the foam doesn't dry on the surface. Use only light pressure.

4. Loosen dirt from the texture

Spread the foam with small circular movements. On the typical Monogram canvas, the soft brush helps you reach the fine surface texture and recesses.

Work especially carefully on edges, seams and printed motifs. Scrubbing is not necessary and can wear down an already stressed surface even further.

5. Wipe off with a clean cloth

Wipe off the foam and loosened dirt with a clean microfibre cloth. You don't need to rinse the canvas afterwards.

Let the bag dry at room temperature. Do not use a hairdryer or radiator for drying. Briefly warming the canvas when carefully turning the lining inside out is a separate technique and is explained below.

How to Clean the Lining of a Louis Vuitton Bag

The lining often shows more clearly what a bag goes through in everyday life. Make-up, powder, dust and leaked products soak into textile quickly. That's why spot-treating stains often works less well than cleaning the entire area evenly.

First remove all dry residue. A lint brush or a small vacuum cleaner on a low setting works well for this.

Then check whether the lining can be pulled out of the bag or carefully turned inside out. Don't force anything. If the coated canvas is cool and stiff, it can crack at stressed points when bent sharply.

Briefly warm the canvas before turning it inside out

Warm the canvas slightly with a hairdryer on the lowest setting for a few seconds. Keep enough distance and move the hairdryer constantly. The material should only become hand-warm and a little more flexible, never hot.

This brief warming is only meant to let you take the lining out and put it back without sharp creasing. It is not a drying method. If the canvas is already cracked, sticky or very stiff, I would not turn the bag inside out.

Treat fabric linings over the whole area

First test for colourfastness. If needed, you can lightly and evenly dampen absorbent fabrics with distilled water. This helps the cleaning product spread better and reduces the risk of hard edges.

Apply CANVAS GLOW FOAM or GLOW CLEANER evenly to the lining. Work the cleaner in gently with a soft brush and dab off loosened dirt with a clean cloth.

Let the lining air-dry completely before putting it back. Do not use GLOW CONDITIONER on fabric.

White Streaks and Dull Spots on Canvas

Light or cloudy areas are often mistaken for water stains. Sometimes, however, it isn't dirt at all but a change in the coating. This can happen after contact with alcohol, disinfectant, acetone or unsuitable cleaners.

A cleaner cannot repair a chemically or mechanically damaged surface. If you work long and hard on the same spot, you are more likely to put additional stress on the coating.

Petroleum jelly, lip balm or oil can sometimes make these streaks temporarily less visible. The grease sits on the surface and changes the shine. The damage underneath remains and becomes visible again after a while.

Home Remedies That Don't Belong on Coated Canvas

• Disinfectants and alcohol wipes
• Acetone and nail polish remover
• Make-up remover
• Magic erasers and abrasive cleaners
• Petroleum jelly, lip balm and cooking oil
• Heavily perfumed wet wipes

Not every wet wipe contains the same ingredients. Without knowing the exact formula, I still wouldn't test one on a high-quality bag. Damier Azur and other light canvas variants in particular show colour transfer or dull spots more quickly.

Removing Denim Transfer and Dark Colour Marks

On light canvas, denim transfer can become visible after just a few wears. If the coating is intact and the colour has only settled on the surface, careful cleaning can reduce the discolouration.

Work gently and check the cloth in between. If a shadow remains after several careful passes, don't keep rubbing. The colour may sit deeper, or the surface may already have changed.

Louis Vuitton recommends avoiding contact with materials that transfer colour heavily wherever possible. This applies especially to light Damier Azur canvas.

Does Canvas Need Leather Care Afterwards?

No. GLOW CONDITIONER is intended for suitable genuine leather. On coated canvas, its conditioning ingredients cannot absorb the way they do into leather. Additional care is not necessary there.

Clean the canvas and let it dry. Treat leather handles and trims separately and only with a product suited to that material.

How to Treat Vachetta Handles

The light handles, straps and trims of many Louis Vuitton bags are made of Vachetta. This open-pored leather reacts very differently from coated canvas.

You should not treat new, very light Vachetta with GLOW CLEANER or GLOW CONDITIONER. Only once it has an even honey to caramel-coloured patina is careful cleaning and care with GLOWBAG intended. Each handle or leather strip is then treated completely and evenly, never just a single spot.

How to Clean MCM Visetos Canvas

Many MCM bags are made of Visetos, a coated canvas with the typical MCM pattern. As long as the surface is intact, you can carefully use CANVAS GLOW FOAM or GLOW CLEANER.

First remove loose dust. Then test the cleaner on a hidden area and, once dry, check whether the colour or shine has changed. If the result is unremarkable, spread a small amount of foam with the GLOW BRUSH or a soft cloth and then wipe off the loosened dirt with a clean microfibre cloth.

On light Visetos bags, denim transfer, make-up and handling marks show up more quickly. Even so, don't work on one spot for long. If the print is already worn or the coating is cracked, cleaning cannot undo this damage.

How to Clean Goyard Canvas

Goyardine is known for its fine chevron pattern. This print in particular can be damaged by vigorous or repeated rubbing. That's why you should not automatically clean a Goyard bag the same way as Louis Vuitton or MCM canvas.

For Goyardine, Goyard recommends a soft, lint-free cloth and broad movements without intensive rubbing. The house explicitly advises against commercially available cleaning and care products. I therefore cannot give a general recommendation for wet cleaning Goyardine with GLOWBAG, even though CANVAS GLOW FOAM was developed for many coated canvas materials.

Remove dust with a soft cloth and, for heavier soiling, follow Goyard's care guidelines or ask them about professional cleaning. Especially with hand-painted Marquage, older bags and already worn chevron motifs, I would not experiment myself.
