How to Care for Your Chanel Bag – Lambskin, Caviar & More
Leather is like skin – it lives, breathes and ages. A Chanel bag is more than an accessory; it is an investment. And just like skin, the right care determines whether it still looks immaculate after years – or shows every sign of neglect. Well-maintained Chanel bags command significantly higher prices on the resale market. Care is value preservation.
In this article, you’ll find out which leathers Chanel uses – and how to clean and care for each one properly with GLOWBAG.
The Most Important Rule for All Chanel Leathers
Regardless of leather type: no home remedies, no alcohol, no wax.
• Wet wipes often contain alcohol or fragrance – they dry out leather over time
• Alcohol dissolves the fatty molecules that keep leather supple – irreversible on lambskin
• Wax-based products clog the pores, make the surface sticky and build up in the quilted stitching – the seams turn white and become unsightly
• Home remedies like vinegar, olive oil or baking soda damage the leather structure
GLOWBAG was developed specifically for the natural leather care of designer handbags – water-based, alcohol-free, wax-free, with natural ingredients such as lanolin and orange oil. Always test on an inconspicuous area before first use.

Lambskin – The Softest Chanel Leather
Lambskin is the softest leather Chanel uses. It feels almost velvety, has a characteristic subtle sheen and takes the Matelassé quilting beautifully. That makes it the classic material of the Classic Flap – and the most delicate.
What you should know about Chanel lambskin:
• Scratches easily – fingernails or jewellery can leave visible marks
• Prone to colour transfer from dark denim or dark clothing
• Sensitive to moisture, heat and make-up
• Dries out without regular care and loses its suppleness
• Small scratches can often be gently buffed out with a finger

Cleaning (GLOW CLEANER): Always spray the GLOW CLEANER onto the microfibre cloth first – never directly onto the leather. Wipe gently in broad strokes, never in one spot. Do not use a brush, as lambskin is sensitive to friction.
Conditioning (GLOW CONDITIONER): Apply thinly and evenly, massage in gently and leave to dry. No buffing required. Repeat every 2–3 months – lambskin needs regular moisture. For vintage pieces, we recommend starting with the conditioner alone, without prior cleaning. For particularly thirsty leather, apply the conditioner every few days.
Caviar Leather – Durable and Everyday-Ready
Caviar is Chanel’s most well-known and best-selling leather. It is a pebbled calfskin with a characteristic grainy texture – significantly more robust than lambskin, more water-resistant and less prone to scratching. Caviar holds the shape of the quilting for longer.
What you should know about Chanel caviar leather:
• More robust than lambskin, ideal for everyday use
• More water-resistant – handles light rain better
• Still dries out without regular care
• Dirt and make-up settle into the grain
• Light-coloured caviar is also prone to colour transfer

Cleaning (GLOW CLEANER): The GLOW CLEANER can be sprayed directly onto the surface and worked in gently with the GLOW BRUSH. The grain can handle a little more than lambskin. Remove residue with a clean cloth.
Conditioning (GLOW CONDITIONER): Apply thinly and evenly, massage in gently and leave to dry. Repeat every 6–8 months.
Calfskin – Typical for the Boy Bag
Calfskin has a finer grain than caviar and is softer than it looks, yet relatively robust. In terms of care, it sits between lambskin and caviar: not quite as sensitive, but not as low-maintenance as caviar.

Spray GLOW CLEANER onto the cloth and wipe gently. Follow with GLOW CONDITIONER. Every 3–4 months.
Aged Calfskin – Vintage Character with Durability (typical for the 2.55 Reissue)

Aged calfskin has an intentionally structured, slightly worn appearance – the vintage look is deliberate, not a flaw. It is very robust, shows scratches barely at all, and is one of the easiest Chanel leathers to care for.

Spray GLOW CLEANER directly onto the surface and work in with a cloth or the GLOW BRUSH. Follow with GLOW CONDITIONER. Every 3–4 months.
Patent Leather – Glamorous but High-Maintenance
Patent leather is created by coating calfskin with a high-gloss lacquer – typically polyurethane-based. This produces the characteristic mirror shine. What many people don’t realise: heat and pressure can cause patent leather to absorb colour from other surfaces – a dark garment or a bag stored too close by can leave permanent marks.
Storage is crucial:
• Store in a cool, dark place – heat promotes colour transfer
• Keep sufficient distance from other bags – direct contact can cause transfer
• Do not let light-coloured bags rub against dark fabrics or clothing

Surface marks can be removed easily with the GLOW CLEANER on a microfibre cloth. Always work in broad, even strokes.
