Can I clean a Lady Dior at home?
A Lady Dior in suitable lambskin or grained calfskin can be carefully cleaned and conditioned at home. Always test any product on an inconspicuous area first and work evenly across the leather surface.
For lambskin, apply the cleaner to a microfibre cloth first. I would not use a brush on this delicate leather. Depending on the finish, grained calfskin can often be cleaned with a soft brush. The conditioner is intended exclusively for suitable genuine leather.
Patent leather should only be cleaned on the surface and should not be conditioned. GLOWBAG is not suitable for nubuck, suede, exotic leathers or particularly delicate speciality materials.

How often your Dior bag needs conditioning depends on how frequently you use it, how it is stored and how the leather feels. The actual condition of the leather matters more than following a fixed schedule.
From a rattan chair to the Lady Dior: the story of Cannage
Cannage is now firmly established as one of Dior’s signature motifs. It is particularly well known from the Lady Dior, although other creations by the house also feature the pattern. It is not found on every Dior bag.
The story of Cannage did not begin with a handbag, but in the salons of 30 Avenue Montaigne in Paris.
On 12 February 1947, Christian Dior presented his first collection there. Its narrow waists, accentuated hips and long skirts became known as the “New Look” and stood in striking contrast to the fashions of the war years.
Guests were seated on elegant Napoleon III-style chairs. Their woven seats inspired the geometric Cannage pattern that would later become one of the house’s best-known codes. Dior itself traces Cannage back to these chairs. Dior on the history of the Cannage motif
The French word “cannage” refers to the traditional technique of weaving cane or rattan into a geometric surface. Over time, the furniture weave became a graphic motif that Dior has interpreted in many different ways.
Cannage made what is probably its most famous appearance on the Lady Dior in the mid-1990s.
How the Lady Dior got its name
The bag was created in the mid-1990s and was initially known as “Chouchou”, a French term of endearment meaning something like “darling”.
In September 1995, Princess Diana visited Paris for the opening of a Cézanne retrospective at the Grand Palais. Bernadette Chirac, France’s First Lady at the time, presented her with a Dior bag that had not yet been officially released. British Vogue on the history of the Lady Dior
Soon afterwards, Diana was photographed carrying the bag in public and went on to wear the design on various occasions. In 1996, the bag was officially named Lady Dior.

The association with Diana helped make the Lady Dior internationally recognised. Today, the bag continues to be interpreted in different sizes, colours and materials.
Condition plays an important role in the resale value of a designer bag. However, whether an individual bag will increase in value cannot be predicted. Model, age, colour, material, rarity and demand are also important factors.
Which leathers are used for the Lady Dior?
The classic Lady Dior is particularly well known for its quilted lambskin with Cannage stitching. Dior also offers the model in grained calfskin as well as other leathers, fabrics and elaborately embellished versions.
For care with GLOWBAG, this guide focuses on two commonly used and generally suitable types of leather: lambskin and calfskin.
Lambskin
Lambskin is exceptionally soft and has a subtle sheen. The Cannage quilting gives the leather its distinctive three-dimensional appearance.
The surface can be sensitive to fingernails, jewellery, moisture and friction. On lighter colours, colour transfer from materials such as denim can also become visible. A Lady Dior in lambskin therefore requires particularly gentle and even treatment.
Grained calfskin
Grained calfskin is firmer and often less susceptible to scratches than very soft lambskin. Minor signs of wear may also be less noticeable within the textured surface.
Calfskin is not immune to damage or waterproof. Dirt and make-up can collect in the grain and around the Cannage stitching.
What to avoid when caring for a Dior bag
Wet wipes, make-up remover and household remedies do not belong on a Lady Dior. Soft lambskin in particular can react to unsuitable products with changes to the surface or finish.
Avoid in particular:
- alcohol and solvents
- vinegar, baking soda and household cleaners
- baby oil, olive oil and rich cosmetic creams
- traditional shoe polish
- strongly sealing care waxes
- rubbing vigorously at a single stain
- hairdryers, radiators and direct sunlight for drying
Products containing alcohol or aggressive cleaning agents can dry out leather or alter its finish. Traditional care waxes can leave a film on the surface and collect around stitching or recessed areas. Wet wipes may also contain alcohol, fragrance or other cleaning ingredients that were not developed for delicate handbag leather.
GLOW CLEANER and GLOW CONDITIONER are water-based and alcohol-free. The conditioner contains ingredients including lanolin and orange oil. It cares for suitable genuine leather and helps keep it supple. It does not replace waterproofing or provide a UV filter.
The formula contains no traditional, strongly sealing care waxes. Lanolin provides a conditioning and replenishing function within the conditioner.
Always test both products on an inconspicuous area before first use.
How to clean a Lady Dior in lambskin
Lambskin should be rubbed as little as possible. Apply GLOW CLEANER to a clean microfibre cloth first rather than spraying it directly onto the leather.
Work evenly across the leather with very little pressure. Follow the Cannage pattern carefully without repeatedly working on individual seams or stains.
I would not use a brush on soft Dior lambskin. It can place unnecessary stress on the delicate surface.
Surface dirt, make-up or light colour transfer may be removed or visibly reduced. Deeply absorbed stains, worn-away colour and scratches are not surface dirt and may remain visible after cleaning.
How to condition a Lady Dior in lambskin
Apply a thin, even layer of GLOW CONDITIONER with a fresh microfibre cloth. Massage it in gently and allow the bag to dry naturally.
There is no need to polish afterwards.
How often you should condition lambskin depends on how the bag is used, stored and on the condition of the leather itself. If the leather feels dry, looks dull or becomes less supple, conditioning may be useful. A bag that is rarely used and stored carefully may need conditioning less often.
How to clean a Lady Dior in calfskin
For calfskin, it is also best to apply GLOW CLEANER to a microfibre cloth first. Clean the bag gently and evenly.
On a pronounced grain, you can also work carefully with the GLOW BRUSH. Test an inconspicuous area first to make sure the surface and finish are suitable for brushing.
The soft brush helps distribute the cleaner within the textured surface. Take particular care around the Cannage stitching, where dirt and product residue can collect.
Remove loosened dirt and excess product afterwards with a clean microfibre cloth.
How to condition a Lady Dior in calfskin
Apply a thin, even layer of GLOW CONDITIONER across the leather. There is no need to polish afterwards.
Let the condition of the leather and how frequently you use the bag guide you. If the leather still feels supple and looks well cared for, there is no need to condition it according to a fixed schedule.
Why Cannage should be treated evenly
The raised quilting and recessed stitching give Cannage its distinctive appearance. When cleaning, however, they also mean that product and moisture may not distribute evenly on their own.
Avoid working intensively on just one small stain. Instead, clean a continuous area of leather evenly and with minimal pressure. This is particularly important on light-coloured or more absorbent leather, where localised treatment can leave visible differences.
Do not apply too much product at once. More cleaner or conditioner does not automatically mean a better result.
How to clean Dior patent leather
Some Lady Dior models are made from patent leather. A high-gloss coating sits over the leather and can be sensitive to heat, pressure and prolonged contact with other materials.
Surface dirt can be treated carefully using GLOW CLEANER on a microfibre cloth. It is best to clean patent leather in a cool room and work gently across the surface.
Do not use GLOW CONDITIONER on patent leather. The conditioning ingredients cannot absorb in the same way as they do on conventional smooth leather.
Yellowing, stickiness or absorbed colour transfer may be changes within the patent coating itself. Surface cleaning cannot reverse these changes.
Store light-coloured patent leather with sufficient distance from dark bags and textiles. Heat can increase the risk of colour transfer onto the patent surface.
Dior materials you should not treat yourself
Alongside lambskin and calfskin, Dior uses many delicate speciality materials.
GLOWBAG is not suitable for:
- nubuck and suede
- genuine crocodile, snake, lizard or ostrich leather
- other exotic leathers
- shearling and similarly napped materials
For satin, metallic leather, embroidery, pearls, sequins and other embellishments, I would also avoid making a general recommendation for wet cleaning. In these cases, ask Dior or a specialist bag spa for advice.
Material combinations also need to be assessed individually. A product that is suitable for the leather may not automatically be suitable for embellishments, edges or textile sections.

How do I clean a Lady Dior in lambskin?
Apply GLOW CLEANER to a clean microfibre cloth and work evenly over the leather with minimal pressure. Do not spray it directly onto lambskin and do not use a brush.
Can I clean Cannage stitching with a brush?
On robust, grained calfskin, a soft brush can be used after a successful patch test. I would avoid using a brush on delicate lambskin.
How often should I condition a Lady Dior?
Use the condition of the bag as your main guide. How often you carry it, how it is stored and the type of leather matter more than a fixed care schedule. If the leather feels dry, looks dull or becomes less supple, conditioning may be useful.
Do I always need to clean the bag before conditioning it?
No. If the leather is clean, you can use GLOW CONDITIONER without cleaning it first. Visible dirt should be removed carefully beforehand.
Can GLOWBAG remove scratches from Dior lambskin?
Very fine surface marks may become less noticeable after conditioning as the leather becomes more supple and the existing colour can appear richer. Deep scratches, exposed leather fibres and areas where colour has worn away cannot be removed through conditioning.
Is GLOWBAG suitable for every Lady Dior?
No. The material determines whether GLOWBAG is suitable. The products can be used on many smooth and grained lambskin and calfskin leathers. GLOWBAG has not been tested or approved for nubuck, suede or exotic leathers. Delicate speciality materials should also be left untreated unless their suitability has been confirmed.
How to keep your Dior bag looking beautiful
Cannage quilting carries a piece of Dior history. To keep it looking beautiful over time, the leather needs care that is appropriate for the material.
For lambskin, that means minimal pressure, no brush and an even application. Grained calfskin is somewhat more robust and can be carefully cleaned with the GLOW BRUSH after a successful patch test. Patent leather should only be cleaned on the surface and should not be conditioned.
Regular, material-appropriate care can help keep the leather supple and maintain its condition. Whether a Lady Dior will increase in value cannot be predicted. On the resale market, condition is one important factor alongside the model, material, colour, age, rarity and demand.
